Blocked Drains

Owning any kind of dwelling can be a lot of work. It always seems like something else needs fixing and you're not always sure if it's worth it to spend a lot of money on a professional. When you learn to fix things yourself, you're gaining a new skill as well as the feeling of accomplishment that comes along with doing something for yourself. Unfortunately, you can't do that with everything, though, and there will be times when the help of a professional is really the only way to go. Blocked drains and other plumbing issues can be particularly tricky.

Common Plumbing Issues For Homeowners

Many things will be easy for you to deal with on your own such as hair or debris clogging up bathroom drains or food clogging up kitchen drains. There are products that make this kind of cleaning pretty simple but you should be aware of a few things before you choose a drain cleaner or declogger you can find in a store. First, find out what kinds of pipes you have. Some pipes may be made of materials that can corrode easily so pouring a drain cleaner down sink drains or bathroom drains could make the problem even worse and result in complete pipe replacement. The drain cleaner should have recommendations right on the container or the people at your local home store can help you decide if it's safe to use on your pipes. Second, be aware that most methods of unclogging a drain at home may cause fumes to fill the room. You'll want to make sure there's ventilation in the room and that all pets and children stay away for a few hours.
Lastly, you'll want to consider leaving any blocked kitchen drains with a garbage disposal completely to the professionals. You can turn off the disposal part to try and unclog the drain but it's still a dangerous endeavor. This one is best left to a professional every time.

Finding a Plumber

For blocked drains, you may need to find a plumber fairly quickly so it's a good idea to already have someone you know on hand to come out and help. Talk to plumbers in your area and find out what their rates are, their hours, and if they offer emergency services. You can keep this number readily available so that when you do have blocked drains you'll know exactly who to call. You will never have to worry about being in a pinch and dealing with your blocked drains or losing the use of your kitchen or bathroom ever again.
