Custom Furniture

Have you ever had a moment when you realize a certain piece of furniture will look great in a certain room, but you have no luck searching furniture stores and websites? We have all had this kind of dilemma.

That’s why the first resolution that pops in our minds is designing custom furniture. It seems like a positive outcome. But nothing in life is perfect, and there are cons to custom furniture building.

Pros

It seems to be the obvious pro, but custom furniture building pieces are beautiful and finely crafted. Unlike something you would buy at a major furniture retailer, custom furniture is fitted to your needs and usually made by hand at a local store. If you’re someone passionate about small business, then supporting a local shop will give you great satisfaction.

Because you’re also supporting a small business, furniture makers will be grateful for your service. You’re not seen as another statistic, another sale, or another way for a salesperson to receive commission or a bonus. In custom furniture building, your service is truly appreciated.

With that being said, custom furniture building is usually cheaper than products you purchase at major furniture retailers. Major furniture retailers have hidden fees and heavy taxes. There are times when getting a piece of furniture custom-made will be a similar price to a product you buy at a major retailer, but custom-made furniture is rarely more expensive than retail furniture.

Cons

If you want to resell the piece or desire to show off the furniture for a special event, you need to set up a deadline with the furniture maker. This is because custom furniture building can be very timely. And all of this depends when certain materials are used — unfortunately, some materials take longer to mold than others.

Unfortunately, if you see a piece of furniture on TV or in a magazine it will be difficult to find a furniture maker to design it for you. Custom furniture makers don’t design dopplegangers, follow what’s trendy, and their pieces shouldn’t be treated as a commodity. Each furniture maker has their own style, their own process, and they want to show off the work they know will help bring in more clients. While yes, they want to work with you — there’s a good chance they will reject designing a piece you saw on social media. Rather, use pictures as a reference and create your own spin on that style. The furniture maker may also have some input to incorporate their own style — it’s highly advised you follow.

It’s easy to go to a furniture store and buy a bed frame or a table. But does that have worth? When you have guests over, you want to feel proud of your belongings. Custom furniture building is a very rewarding trade, and furniture builders are passionate about their work. You’re not another number to them — rather they will see you as someone who appreciates art. While there are downsides to custom-made furniture, you can expect well-crafted work that you will love showing off.
