Cleaning Blinds

Window blinds are bound to get dirty over time. The buildup of dirt and grime can affect their appearance to the point that you forget what they looked like when you bought them, but only if you don’t maintain them well. Luckily for you, window blinds cleaning is not a difficult task. With a few handy tips and techniques, you can make this chore easier and hassle-free. So, make sure you read these tips before cleaning your window blinds the next time:

Use a Cotton Sock

While microfiber cloths and towels are perfect for cleaning blinds, regardless of the material they are made from, you can use an old cotton sock as an alternative. You simply have to dip the sock in the cleaning solution and some water and then clean your blinds. However, do keep in mind that cotton socks will not do a good job of cleaning wooden blinds. Therefore, you should only follow this window blinds cleaning tip if your blinds are made from PVC or aluminum.

Be Careful When Vacuuming

Using a vacuum cleaner for cleaning your window blinds is a highly convenient option. However, vacuums are too powerful and can end up damaging your blinds. Therefore, for window blinds cleaning, you should use the upholstery attachment. This will not only get the job done but you can rest assured your blinds will remain safe from damage.

Have Fabric Blinds Dry Cleaned

If you have window blinds made from fabrics, DO NOT put them in your washing machine. Washing your fabric blinds at home can cause them to crumple and bend and they might not straighten out perfectly. This is why you should always send your fabric blinds to the dry cleaner to have them cleaned properly without risking damaging their appearance or durability. Continuing on the previous tip, you should also avoid washing fabric blinds by hand or in the bath.

Close the Slats for Cleaning Shutter Blinds

Shutter blinds aren’t difficult to clean but you can actually make the task easier by shutting the slats beforehand. This will allow you to simply wipe over the slats and frame without having to insert the cloth between each blind. You can use a feather duster to clean the areas that are a little hard to access.

So What About Wooden Blinds? Here’s a Solution

The tips mentioned above can help you with window blinds cleaning, but wooden blinds require a little more intricacy and care. If your wooden blinds are grimy and dirty, you can create a simple solution for cleaning them. Mix two drops of washing up liquid and 1 tbsp. of baking soda in some warm water. Dip a microfiber cloth in the solution. Let it dry and wring it if necessary. You CANNOT apply a wet cloth to wooden blinds. Simply wipe the slats using the cloth, but don’t apply too much pressure.

So, as you can see, cleaning window blinds is not difficult. However, if you feel you will not be able to execute these tips properly or can’t seem to find the time for it, feel to free call in a professional window blinds cleaning service.
