Saving power and helping your refrigerator to run better and more efficiently can be done in 5 simple and easy steps, without requiring you to go to any major trouble. A well-maintained refrigerator will ensure that your meat stays frozen, and vegetables stay cool as you would like them to. It also takes the strain and heavy duty off your appliance, which will add years onto its life. After all, who has money for new appliances on a regular basis?

Better refrigeration: start at the door

Your fridge door closes with a magnetic, rubber seal. This seal helps to ensure that your door does close each time you swing it and walk away. It also ensures that the cold air stays locked inside when the door is closed, helping to insulate the inside temperatures. Inspect your fridge door at the seal for any irregularities. If you do find something looking rather suspiciously like a damage, hold up a paper napkin or a tissue to the door. If it flutters, there is air escaping from your fridge, and you are paying to cool your entire kitchen. Have the seal replaced, it is much cheaper than the ongoing expense of wasted electricity.

Keep the hots out of the cold

Keep hot foods that have just been cooked out of the refrigerator for as long as possible before you put them into a fridge. The closer food is to room temperature when you refrigerate it, the better. An item that is extra hot will require more work from the refrigerator to cool it down, once again, causing unnecessary strain on your appliance. The heat radiating out of a dish can also affect other foods or medication stored in the fridge, while it is still hot.

Vacuum and clean

This may seem extremely unlikely, but truthfully, it makes a great deal of difference to the efficiency of a refrigerator. Move your refrigerator away from the wall and be sure to vacuum all the dust and dirt trapped behind it. Keeping the condenser coils free and clear of dust and dirt will make it easier for your appliance to cool itself, as the heat it emits can flow away without any obstructions blanketing it in. This will also take the strain off, and help your fridge stay cooler.

Tupperware galore

Tupperware might sound like a tedium, each time you need to store some food, especially with how difficult it is to keep track of Tupperware and their corresponding lids. However, in the fridge, most foods give off moisture. Being an insulated space, this moisture has nowhere to go but hang around in the air, placing strain and more hard work on your compressor. Covering your food with lids ensures that each food keeps its own flavour to itself, and the moisture stay locked in.

Get the most out of your refrigerator and treat it kindly. Of course, if you are already experiencing problems with it, you may need a refrigeration technician, but keeping these points in mind and implementing them will ensure that your refrigerator lives a much longer, happier life.
