Telemarketing is a job by which a person sells goods or services by phoning general members of the public. Often, the people they call are not expecting their calls, and these are called cold calls. Telemarketers can operate from a home-based office or a call centre. An essential part of mastering the incredibly difficult art of selling via the telephone is having a good and solid telephone script in place, a clear and confident voice, and excellent telephone manners. Being fairly tough skinned is also going to go a long way in getting you some success.
1. Preparation is key
Ensuring you are fully prepared and know your product well is a key element to your success. Find out everything you can about the product, and try to imagine what people might want to ask you about it. Aim to be so prepared that no question could leave you stumped or feeling uncertain. Knowing your product will help you to sound confident, and confidence can make or break the sale. Know the unique selling points about products and all of the benefits a user might enjoy.
2. Sell the product and the company
Make sure you represent the company in a very positive light, as this will also inspire confidence in the product. You also want to sound like you are backed up by a solid team. Knowing what reviews have been written about the company can also help you to understand their clients better. Research their policies and ethos, and be sure to echo them in your sale.
3. Grow a tough skin
Understanding that most of your calls are unexpected and may be unwelcome will help you to be prepared for lots of rejection. You may speak to some pleasant people, and you may get some really awful people on the phone. Remember that rejection is okay, as long as you never take it personally, and simply move on to the next phone call. A positive attitude can be difficult to keep hold of, but it does pay off, both in your personal life and in your career as a telemarketer.
4. Listen, don’t just talk
In a sales position you always have your pitch to deliver to clients, and it can be tempting to try and race through it and just make the sale. You are far more likely to make the sale if you spend some time listening to the potential client. Ask them about their needs, if they say that they need better service or more convenience, it gives you a chance to highlight those aspects in the product or service that you are selling. Ask them for feedback to get better direction on where to take your pitch, they will also appreciate being asked.
Being a telemarketer can be a tough job, with lots of rejection, and you almost never get to meet your clients face to face. Perseverance will pay off if you can stick it out and get yourself established. A commission based salary gives you a potentially unlimited income.
