If you are an aspiring videographer, getting the basic foundation of great videography habits down will help on your journey to becoming successful. If you are a hobby videographer, or simply wish to capture some of your favourite moments effectively, these tips will greatly assist you. All great videographers had a modest start, and the only way forward is up, so let’s get into it and see where this can go!

1.    Be Organised

This is a crucial first step! You need to make sure your work space is clean and uncluttered. Your work space, is, of course, your videos! Make sure your videos are stored in a way that makes each one easy to find, identify, and move to a different device at any time that you may need to. Capturing the perfect footage is useless if the video will be untraceable later on when you want to edit it. Remember that cameras can be replaced, but your footage can not. Take extra care to back it up, and create yourself a cloud based storage area to ensure that it is never lost. Naming files with a date and a description will simplify matters down the line too.

2.    Spare the Zoom

The one way to tell an amateur from professionals, even with perfect shots, is that amateurs overuse the zoom function. Professionals do use the zoom, but they use it slower and far more rarely. Make sure you are decisive in your shots and clearly decide on whether to use the zoom or not to use the zoom. Basically, don’t keep hopping fences, make your decision and stick to it.

3.    Work with the light

Unless you have lighting equipment, you need to learn to work with the light you have available naturally. Learning to use the natural light will always put you at a distinct advantage, and eliminate the need to get lighting equipment. Using available light means bringing your camera into the light. This would exclude direct sunlight, as this generally casts unflattering shadows on most people faces, overshadowing the features. Acquiring an inexpensive reflector can assist with this issue, as a reflector would generally cast an even light onto someone’s face, removing the unflattering shadows.

4.    A steady hand for a steady shot

Using your hips to turn if you want to pan will prevent the unsteady shots that occur when you try to pan with your hands. A steadier shot is of course, far more professional. The arms take strain if they need to suddenly take the weight of the camera, and therefore, using your shoulder as a rest, turning from the hips will give a smooth movement and steady pan.

If this sounds rather overwhelming, consider hiring a professional videographer with all the training, skills and equipment for the perfect shots, making your memories worth remembering.
