Wooden Flooring

Wooden flooring is one of the most versatile floors to have in your home because it goes perfectly with absolutely any décor style and colour. It’s stylish, elegant and completely timeless. Keeping your wooden flooring in the best possible condition will allow the whole building to exude class.

While adequate protection is key in preventing undue damage to spoil your wooden flooring, your wash routine may require some tweaking too. Let’s see what simple to follow tips can be implemented instantly to help extend the life of your wooden flooring.

1.    The Two Bucket Cleaning Procedure

When you are cleaning your wooden floors, try to use two buckets of water. The first bucket will contain your cleaning product, while the second bucket of water will serve the sole purpose of being there for rinsing. Often times a floor may have a dull or greyish sheen to it, this is caused by dirty water drying on the floor, a common side effect of a wash routine containing only one bucket.

2.    Out With the Fibre

Microfiber may appear to the latest in all household cleaning products, such as cloths and mops, but your wooden flooring will strongly disagree. Microfiber is great at grabbing all the specs of dirt, but it is slightly too abrasive for wooden floors. Over time, the abrasion of microfiber can cause the oil finish on the flooring to deteriorate faster than it should, leaving your floors vulnerable and exposed.

3.    Tread Carefully

Avoid walking on your wooden floors with heels that can create indentations, have spikes, or sharp areas. While it can be very difficult to limit all the people who walk over your floors to only wearing soft-soled shoes, this will ultimately help to extend the life of your floors dramatically. Similarly, keeping your pet's nails trimmed will also benefit your floors.

4.    Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Cleaning products that contain citrus, ammonia, or other harsh chemicals should be avoided. Stick to cleaning products that are easy to use, and are specifically designed to clean and maintain wooden flooring. With a good cleaning routine, you can consider giving your floors a re-sand and refinish every three years, this will keep them in good condition and will maintain the great aesthetic appeal they add to the home.

5.    Rugs and Matts

Other than adding to the décor of your home or office, putting down a few beautiful and stylish rugs can also help to save your floors. Placing them strategically in high traffic areas can save your floors from the dirt and debris that is carried in through entryways. Ensure that rugs are used correctly, as the rubberized underneath can sometimes trap moisture, damaging your floors rather than saving them.

If you are considering having wooden floors fitted into your home or office, you are making a style decision that will always work. Keeping your wooden floors clean and well maintained may sound like a difficult task, but as soon as you find a cleaning routine and cleaning products that work for you, it will be a very rewarding investment.
