I offer chip-level board diagnostics and repair solutions for laptops - where possible. Sometimes replacement of a chip is not viable due to being based in South Africa but in most cases a burnt mosfet can be replaced or a shorted capacitor removed. Dead laptops are those that won't power on when the power button is pressed. Often there can be a short on one of the power rails. Voltage can drop even to 0 volts or voltage can remain constant at 19 volts and still show a partial short. A partial short usually indicates a short on a secondary power rail, usually the 3.3v power rail. Other times, the laptop may come on for a few seconds and then shut down almost immediately. This usually indicates a short or other problem on the 5v power rail. Other laptops turns on, stays on but has no picture and no backlight. This is a different issue and usually pertains to a dedicated graphics chip that needs to be reflowed for a temporary solution. Other laptop issues such as charger port issues, hinge repairs and screen replacement are also provided.
Most of the issues with laptop motherboards pertain to power supplies. the laptop uses step-down power supplies or buck converters to lower the voltage for the processor, ram, 5v and other devices. On the other hand, the led screen requires higher voltage and the voltage is stepped up. Most of the repair work done pertains to these power supplies and to ensure that their are no shorts and that they are fully operational. The superio or startup chip will not power up if any of these power supplies are not working and your laptop will die giving a black screen or turning off after a few seconds.
I have many imported tools to assist in laptop and tiny smd micro-electronic repair including a powerful hdmi microscope, rework station, linear bench power supply, switching bench power supply, multimeter and other tools such as a thermal sensor camera, freezing spray and an oscilloscope for monitoring pulses and spikes. Instead of discarding your damaged laptop (especially if it is an expensive laptop) and being persuaded by a salesperson to purchase a new one, bring it in and let me look at it. It may be repairable using imported tools and unusual specialized London (UK)-based laptop knowledge which is foreign to most computer shops.
