“If you think you can, you probably can. If you think you can’t - well, that self-limiting and self-fulfilling belief might well stop you from doing something you’re perfectly capable of doing” (Albert Bandura).
During my life’s journey I have needed lots of self-efficacious beliefs to achieve and reach my goals. I have been fortunate that God and people in my life have been gracious to help me build this self-efficacy. I have received grace and therefore seek to be gracious to others.
My undergraduate training and post graduate training as a teacher at the University of the Western Cape propelled me into a career as an educator. This I would do for 10 years, after which my career as a school psychologist was launched. By this time I had completed my Honours and Masters in Psychology at the University of Johannesburg. It was during those fifteen years, as I studied, worked with children and their parents and did community interventions, that a deep love and compassion for children ensued. Of particular interest was the effect of attachment on the development of children, a current research pursuit at the University of the Witwatersrand.
As Community Psychology has always been a passion of mine, I utilized my role as school psychologist to afford me the opportunity to serve on the governing body of Coronationville Training Centre and assist them with governance, social justice issues, as well as to train educators and assess children. During this time a colleague and I also facilitated the acquisition of a Senior Special School Goudveld, to assist adolescents who have special educational needs. I also chaired the cultural division of the Education Department’s Clarion Society, with a special focus on dramatic performance. Whilst completing my doctorate in Psychology, I pursued my career as community psychologist as the supervising psychologist for the Salvation Army, stationed at the Carl Sithole Centre in Soweto. When I left the centre, we had established a Counseling Centre and a School for children with learning abilities. I completed my Phd in 2000 at the University of Johannesburg and started a career at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2002. Currently I am a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, where research and teaching inform my passion, my practice.
