Like most teens, the first thing on my mind at 18yrs old was girls..... nope CARS.
That freedom of going when and where you want to go. So my dad bought me an R2000 1975 Beetle... man was it ugly. Fern green with no wheel caps, turd brown seats, and a 1300 engine, just what the girls always wanted to be seen in.....right :(
I wanted my car to be more ME... So I made a list of to-do’s with Paint, wheels, and interior not to forget that engine had to go (it sounded like a hippo farting in a straw), nice lights, and then reality kicked in. No Money...
So I started restoring cars with my freshly retrenched dad to get some cash. We started ground-up restorations of Beetles for Students and later GT40’s, AC Cobra’s, Corvettes, and Harley’s but I was not the master of this painting thing yet.
I wanted a pro paint job on the beetle but I was still a rookie at it so I wanted it done by a panel shop. I learned one thing while visiting several big shops to see how they do it, they only watch the bottom line. After a lot of searching my dad called me one day and said: “Why don’t I paint my own car? Since I keep complaining about other shop's work not preparing properly or applying too much body filler or not polishing properly?”
So I started with some training basics but found that no training for show car paintwork does not exist in SA. So I spent a lot of time in the school of hard knocks but got the job done myself. Dad loved it, friend requests started to roll in, and then back in November 1993 eventually I started my own company. #galaxycustomspta specialize in professional custom #spraypaint work for #motorcycle, #musclecar, and #classiccar industry. If someone said it could not be done, I wanted to try it to find out if it truly is impossible. Most of the time it was not. Usually turned out to be a budget or time issue and only sometimes specialized products.
I learned that nothing is impossible if you really work for it. My passion and enjoyment of this trade have me wandering new corridors these days like Metal Fabrication (building panels from flat sheet metal)
