Did you know that it just takes 2 to 3 breaths of toxic fumes to be rendered unconscious (with death a very real possibility soon after)? Obviously, fire safety is an absolutely crucial issue. So what can you do to improve fire safety in your home? Read on to find ten ways to secure your home and loved ones…

1.    Install a smoke alarm

Alright, looks like we’re starting with the basics. Yes, a smoke alarm is one of the simplest things you can do to improve fire safety in your home. If you just moved in to a new home and the place already has smoke alarms, make sure you get them checked. Moving in with a couple of new alarms is the best policy.

2.    Fit carbon monoxide detectors

Many people think that having a smoke alarm is enough. While that definitely is a must have, it’s a good idea to install carbon monoxide detectors as well. Carbon monoxide poisoning is fatal so you really want to know if this gas is leaking anywhere in your home. You need to be wary of heating appliances as well as open fires since they’re the usual suspects in this regard.

3.    Safely store electric items and matches

Make sure all small electrical items and matches are out of the reach of small children. All sockets should be covered. If you have toddlers, you need to install cupboard locks. Tripping hazards become especially deadly when there’s electricity involved. So keep high traffic areas in your home clear of electrical leads and cords. Also, remember to unplug appliances at night, except of course those that need to run around the clock like freezers!

4.    Check electrical appliances and sockets

Overloading electrical appliances can lead to overheating and ultimately a house fire. Carefully check all plugs to ensure there are no dislodged wirers. Every cooker and boiler installation should be completed by a certified professional.

5.    Select an escape route

You must have a pre-determined escape route that you can use in case of a fire. Everyone in your family should know about this route. The route should be the easiest, fastest and safest way to leave the house if a fire breaks out. Keep the exit of this route clear at all times. In case some doors are double locked, make sure everyone living in your house knows where the keys are.

6.    Designate a fire room

You can take the help of the fire department on this one. The idea is to choose one room in your house where your family can safely wait for the fire brigade, in case you aren’t able to use the fire escape route. This room should be easily visible from the outside and have a connected telephone (yes, in addition to the smartphone that’s always in your hand and can easily be dropped in a commotion).

7.    Know the building procedures

If you live in an apartment building, make sure you know all the fire procedures. Also make sure that the communal fire fighting equipment is inspected regularly. As discussed in the previous point, see if the escape route is clearly marked and cleared.

8.    Check the chimney

Open fires have become more common in recent years. Lighting up and using a chimney can be exciting, adventurous and even romantic. But don’t get carried away! Make sure the chimney as been swept properly. Not only will Santa Clause be able to find his way through the chimney, but you will reduce chances of a house fire.

9.    Invest in fire safety equipment
This is no time to skimp on expenses. Invest in quality fire safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and fire blankets. And don’t just buy the equipment – learn how to use it. You can injure yourself or a loved one if you don’t use the equipment properly. Not to mention you won’t be able to protect anyone from the fire if you can’t work the equipment!

10.    Arrange a fire safety check

It’s always a good idea to have the local fire and rescue services conduct a fire safety check. This will help you make sure that you are following all of the above (and more) best practices to improve fire safety in your home.

Fire safety is a serious, serious issue. Use the above information to safeguard your home and if you have kids, educate them on this matter as well.
