Lighting Installation

Lighting installation may appear simple on the surface, but when you get to it, it can take a lot of time and effort. Proper preparation is necessary to ensure you install the lights perfectly. Otherwise, your entire effort will go down the drain. Plus, you have to make sure you complete the task safely. To make things easier for you, here are some tips for safe lighting installation:

Before Installing the Lights

•    You need to comply with the local and state codes regarding lighting. Believe it or not, the way you set up the lights or the size of the lighting fixtures might violate the codes and lead to sanctions. You don’t want to be on the wrong side of the law, do you?
•    Check that all the parts are intact and free of damage or defect when you receive the package. The package should also include the manual that you can follow to install the lights perfectly. Following instructions can help install the lights safely.
•    In case you have ordered a fixture with delicate parts, stash it away, out of sight. This is particularly important if you have pets or children in the house. You certainly don’t want the parts breaking and posing a safety hazard with kids around.
•    Last, but not the least, check the junction box to see if it can support the weight of the lighting fixture you are planning to install. It is a good idea to call in a lighting installation professional for checking this to ensure the junction box can be replaced in case the fixture is heavy.

During Installation

•    When it comes to lighting installation, you should only go ahead with it if you have some experience of dealing with wires and electrical outlets. There is an inherent safety risk when dealing with electricity. If you feel you lack the necessary experience, call in a professional electrician.
•    If you do choose the DIY route, make sure you turn off the power before you remove a lighting fixture. If the power is on, you might get a jolt. Let the wires cool down for a few minutes before you start. Keep in mind that the wires might still be hot after you turn the power off. If that’s the case, use a tester to make sure there is no live current.
•    When deciding on the lights for the fixture, check that it doesn’t exceed the maximum wattage. Otherwise, you are risking starting a fire.
•    Get someone to assist you during the process. You cannot realistically carry a heavy fixture while you are up on the ladder. Instead of constantly going up and down, ask a friend to help you with lighting installation.
•    Follow the instructions from the manual that comes in the package. The instructions are provided to help you install lighting fixtures safely.

These are some lighting installation tips you can follow to complete the job safely. However, it is always a good idea to call in a professional electrician to save yourself the hassle, or possibly an electric shock or two!
