Sports Lessons

Playing sport is an important part of childhood. It can be difficult to encourage the quieter, less competitive children to venture outside and onto the sports field. Not every child feels comfortable chasing a rugby ball and getting tackled, or kicking a soccer ball across a field. Playing a sport does not have to mean the typical high impact, competitive sports you see on the field. While hockey, netball, soccer, rugby and volleyball are great activities, a contemplative game of chess, ballet, golf, or even online gaming can yield the same benefits as high impact sports. Getting a child involved in any extracurricular activity is extremely important. Here are a few reasons why:

1.    Sports make a high impact on school work

Many people mistakenly believe that activities not related to sports will distract and deter a child from completing the necessary school work. The logic makes sense, however it is found that the goal setting abilities and concentration that is exercised in sports reflect in their school work. A child learns important skills and practices repetition and memorization, both of which are key elements in studying at school.

2. Keeps them out of trouble

We all know this cliché, keep them busy so they stay out of trouble. This cliché exists for a reason. Keeping a scholar's attention on a goal relating to a passion they have, will focus their attention away from drugs and other nefarious activities. Many parents hope that by engaging their children in activities they are not necessarily interested in (like study groups) they will achieve this. While it does help, partially, the best preventative and protection against teen pregnancy and drugs is to engage the passion and interest of the child. Let them discover their true skills and allow them to pursue their goals.

3. Team work

The ability to function as part of a team is a key element in the success an adult will experience in his life at work and in any endeavour he chooses to pursue, even starting a family requires an element of teamwork. Engaging in team sports really exercises this skill. It teaches a person to accept defeat as part of the game, and to take it with humility and graciousness.

4. Physical benefits

Playing sports can obviously help with physical health and conditioning, but it also helps with mental health. The satisfaction of setting and attaining goals, as well as having a great focal point helps to prevent depression and low self esteem. The endorphins also play a key role in relaxation and happiness. Physical activity also helps to build bone density, decreasing the risk of osteoporosis later on in life.
