In 2012 Fairbridges, celebrates its Bicentennial – 200 years of continuous legal practice since John Merrington established the firm at 3 Kortemarkt Street in Cape Town on 06 November 1812.

According to Chairman, Louis Rood, sustainability and continuity are not only what makes this milestone significant. Rather it is that Fairbridges represents and symbolises the crucial role that the independent legal profession has played in South Africa, from the early colonial era, through wars, political upheaval, apartheid, economic and social turmoil through to the present. "The dawning of a liberated constitutional and democratic South Africa", says Rood "has brought with it many challenges but we are confident that the legal profession will remain in the forefront of the quest for justice, the rule of law, and the protection and fulfilment of the values enshrined in our Bill of Rights."
