  • Is it worthwhile to use gas appliances?

    Yes, gas appliances are known to be more cost-effective, especially in the winter. In addition, gas stoves heat up much faster than electric stoves. You’ll be able to start cooking straight away. On the other hand, gas heaters are really good at warming up a space. It’s almost as good as lighting up a fire. If you’re interested in cutting your electricity costs in Cape Town, gas appliances are the way to go.

  • Do I need to hire a certified gas installer in Cape Town?

    It’s also a legal requirement for all gas appliances to have a certificate of conformity (COC). The law falls under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. If you own a gas appliance that doesn’t have a COC, your insurance company might not pay out if there’s any damage to your property in Cape Town caused by a gas appliance.

  • How long does it take for a gas cylinder to become empty?

    It depends on how often you use your gas appliance in Cape Town. However, one gas cylinder can last a couple of months if it’s used sparingly. There are also plenty of ways to check that you gas cylinder is still relatively full.

    Firstly, if the gas cylinder is small enough, you can weigh it. The ‘empty’ weight should be printed somewhere on the cylinder. You can refer to this number and check if there’s still a decent amount of gas left or if you need a refill. In order to do this, you’ll need to disconnect the gas cylinder while ensuring that the valve is properly closed, and place it on a big enough scale. The difference between the scale reading and the ‘empty’ weight will tell you how much gas is left in the cylinder.

    You can also purchase a gas level indicator in Cape Town which you can be attached to the cylinder and monitor gas levels. Alternatively, you can measure the temperature of the gas cylinder and use it to gauge an approximate gas level.

  • Is using gas appliances a health risk?

    No, it’s not a risk if you use the appliances properly. Make sure that there isn’t a gas leak that could contaminate the air and cause someone to breathe in the harmful gases. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a risk.

  • How do I tell if my gas is leaking?

    You’ll immediately notice the strong smell of gas if the cylinder is leaking. The smell is easy to recognise and won’t be mistaken for anything else. In addition, if the flame on your gas stove is orange/ yellow instead of blue, it suggests that too much gas is getting let out at once. If you are still unable to locate the leak, we recommend that you contact a gas specialist in Cape Town to locate and fix the leak. Remember to close all valves properly to avoid fires and possible explosion.
