Plastering is a construction process where rough walls and uneven surfaces are covered up. A professionally built property will usually have plastered walls or ceilings. Plaster is a mixture of cement/ concrete, lime, sand and water. The ratio of each component depends on the desired effect.

Can I plaster on my own if I buy the materials?

If you’re a fan of DIY projects, plastering a surface can be done on your own. However, it can be difficult to make sure that you have purchased the right materials and have the skills to execute the job well. The best thing to do is hire a plastering contractor in George that knows exactly how to get the job done. If you’d like to save money and avoid hiring a professional, it’s advisable to practice on a small surface before committing to the full DIY project.

Do I have to plaster a surface before painting or tiling it?

Yes, plastering a surface makes it smoother and much easier to paint over. Any qualified plastering contractor in George will tell you about the importance of making sure that a wall or ceiling is plastered. You’ll also need to plaster uneven walls before installing tiles. It might look like you can skip the plastering step, but it’s never a good idea. The tiles could fall off and crack if there isn’t a solid, plastered surface for them to attach to.

What types of plaster finishes are there?

Plastering a surface is an opportunity to be creative. You don’t always have to opt for a completely smooth finish. Textured walls can look very nice, especially in an outside space. Feel free to ask your plastering contractor in George about all possible options before making a choice. Some plastering contractors will even have a speciality. Here is a list of common plaster finishes: -Smooth cast plaster finish -Rough cast plaster finish -Sand-faced plaster finish -Pebble dash plaster finish -Scrapped plaster finish -Textured plaster finish

How long does it take to plaster a surface?

It depends on the size of the surface and the number of plaster coats required to complete the job. There’s no way of telling exactly how long it will take. If the surface is extremely uneven, you might need to do 2 or 3 coats. Nevertheless, the plastering contractors in George should be able to estimate the amount of time it will take to plaster an area.

Is plaster waterproof?

No, plaster is usually not waterproof on its own. However, many suppliers in George have created their own plaster solutions that can be considered fully/ partially waterproof. A waterproofing agent is usually applied to the plaster after it has dried on the relevant surface. A waterproofing agent or sealant should ideally be applied by a professional plastering contractor. The slightest mistake could result in water leakage and other construction problems. It might not be noticeable straight away. However, it could be an extra expense in future.
