How to service an air conditioner

Your humble air conditioner performs a hugely important role, whether it's a single free-standing model or a wall-mounted system featuring several units. The air conditioner must work extremely hard, especially when the summer season is most intense. Knowing how to service an air conditioner can help keep it working effectively and efficiently as and when needed. Regular maintenance is an absolute must.

1. Know when the air conditioner needs a service

The best way to tell when an air conditioning unit needs to be repaired is to check the temperature gauge. If it reads low, there could be several reasons why. You might want to call a professional to inspect your air conditioner. In addition to checking the temperature gauge, there are some things you can do yourself to help diagnose the issue, such as checking if the filter or condenser is dirty.

2. Replace air filters when you need to

The best way to maintain the operational effectiveness of an air conditioner unit is to replace or clean the filters as and when necessary. Obstructed filters will affect the airflow levels and significantly reduce the system's efficiency. If the airflow does get obstructed, it can go around the filter and drop dust directly into the evaporator coils, reducing the coil's ability to absorb heat. Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a new one can significantly reduce energy consumption.

3. Pay attention to the evaporator coil

The air conditioner's evaporating coil collects dust and debris over its months and years of service, making it less effective at absorbing heat. Cleaning the coil regularly helps prevent the coil from becoming clogged with dirt and insulating material. External coils can also cause a build-up of dirt if the outside environment is dusty or there are nearby trees. Check your outdoor condenser coil every year and clean the coil as necessary to keep it operating efficiently.

4. Check that the vents are working correctly

You should minimise dirt and debris near the indoor unit's vents and clean the surrounding area with a damp cloth. Your vents can easily become blocked by leaves, dust, and other items, so be sure to do this job thoroughly. Also, when you put everything back to normal, keep curtains, clothing and ornaments well away from the vents.

5. Clean the unit's louvres

The louvres are the oscillating blades that direct airflow into the room. They're usually located just above the blower motor and near the bottom of the outdoor unit. Cleaning the louvres isn't difficult, but it does require some tools. You'll need a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, a small paintbrush and a vacuum cleaner or hand vac. Start by opening up the front access panel of the air conditioning unit. Remove the screws holding the cover plate in place. Then, carefully pull the cover plate away from the unit, exposing the fan assembly. If there's no dust build-up around the blades, you don't need to blow out the interior. However, if you see any dirt or debris, use the brush attachment of the vacuum cleaner to clear it out.

6. Clear debris around the external compressor

Keep the outdoor compressor unit free of nearby vegetation and debris. This includes grass, bushes, trees and shrubs. If possible, keep it off the ground, too. A quick sweep with a broom or rake will do the trick. Otherwise, use a leaf blower or garden hose to blow away dirt and debris. You could even run a vacuum cleaner over the entire area to pick up loose particles. Also, run a vacuum cleaner over the unit's exterior to suck up dust and debris. If there are any cracks around the outside of the unit, make sure that you avoid those areas. It's probably best to leave the internal workings of an outdoor compressor to a trained professional.

7. Check that all components are working properly

Important components in the system, such as the expansion valve and the air compressor, perform a vital role. These components work together to cool your home effectively and efficiently. They're also responsible for keeping your house comfortable throughout the summer months. The costliest aspect of an air conditioner replacement is generally the air compressor. While you're carrying out your service, it's a good idea to check that everything is doing what it should.

Regular servicing of an air conditioner unit is something many people choose to do themselves. Whether you do the same or call in an air conditioning specialist, the service itself is a must-have. It can lead to greater efficiency, and in the long run, it can save you a significant amount of money on your energy bills.
