How to install a wooden toilet seat

Toilets come in many different styles — modern toilets feature sleek designs and clean lines, while traditional models tend to look much more ornate. If you're looking to replace your existing toilet seat as part of a bathroom renovation project, there are a number of factors to consider before buying a new model. A good rule of thumb is to choose something that fits well into your bathroom decor. For example, if you like bright colours, opt for a model with a solid colour finish; if you prefer neutral tones, go for a model with a patterned design. You'll also want to make sure that the new toilet seat works well for you, both functionally and aesthetically.

1. Buy the correct toilet seat for your needs

Toilets are often overlooked, especially when people think about how important toilets are to our daily lives. However, there are many reasons why you might want to change your toilet seat. For example, if you're looking for something different, or if you're having problems with the current one. Or perhaps you just fancy a new design. Whatever the case, you will have your own reasons why you might want a replacement toilet seat.

2. Choose wooden seats for more comfort

If you decide to buy a new toilet seat, read up on the product reviews before making your purchase. Look for ratings like "good," "average," and "poor." These ratings tell you whether people had problems with the product, such as a lack of comfort or an inability to correctly fit it. They also let you know whether the manufacturer offers warranty coverage. Once you've found a good deal, follow the manufacturer's directions for installation. For example, if the manufacturer recommends putting the new seat onto the bowl first, do so. Then, screw down the bolts holding the seat into place. Finally, fill the tank with water and flush the toilet once to test that everything works properly.

3. Remove the old seat with ease

First things first: Before installing a new toilet seat, you'll need to take off the old one. Most toilet seats include bolts that attach to the bowl itself, making removal fairly simple. However, if your toilet doesn't include such a bolt, you might have to unscrew the entire toilet tank cover to access the screws holding down the seat. Once you've removed the old toilet seat, you'll want to dispose of it properly. Depending on the material of the old toilet seat and where you live, you may be able to recycle it.

4. Correctly position the seat over the toilet bowl

Next, position the new toilet seat over the hole where the previous seat used to sit. Use the included hardware to fasten the seat firmly to the bowl. Check to see that the seat is level, then tighten the bolts securely. Once everything is installed correctly, test the new toilet seat to make sure it functions properly. Turn on the water supply and flush the toilet several times to ensure that the seat moves freely and drains easily. If anything feels wonky, check the installation again. If the seat is of a standard size, there shouldn't be much of a problem in achieving the optimum seat installation.

5. Carefully consider the wide range of toilet seats

There are two general types of toilet seats – one that self-closes and another that doesn’t. The most obvious difference between a closed and open toilet seat is that the former requires a lid to be lifted up and off before sitting down. If you don’t lift it up, it stays where it is and there isn’t much room for privacy. Self-close toilets have been around since the 1970s. These toilets are similar to a standard close seat except that they feature a mechanism that allows the seat to move into place without lifting it up.

As a general rule, a wood toilet seat is usually more comfortable, and it has the added bonus of feeling a little warmer in the winter months. Plastic toilet seat designs offer more in the way of variety, but they can lack comfort for the user. Whether you're just changing the seat as a stand-alone process or you're doing so as part of your dream bathroom project, it's important to take care doing the job, and to follow all relevant instructions. After all, bathroom makeovers can be highly complex operations.
