How to replace a bathtub

If you've got a leaky or worn bathtub, there are several options open to you. You can tackle the problem yourself with some help from a plumber, for example, or you can choose and install a brand new replacement as part of a bathroom renovation project.

1. Choose carefully

You can find a variety of different sizes, styles and materials; however, you'll want to keep a few things in mind before making your choice. First off, you'll want to choose a model that fits into your bathroom's dimensions. You'll also want to consider whether you want a freestanding tub or a pedestal tub. Freestanding tubs tend to be easier to install, but they require more space around them. Pedestal tubs, meanwhile, can be mounted onto walls or even built directly into the floor. They often come with built-in benches and shelves, too.

2. Measure the available space that you have

Before you start shopping for a new tub, you need to measure your bathroom to determine exactly what size tub you need. You can do this yourself quite easily. All you'll need to ascertain are the available width and length of the space you have in mind. Next, you'll need to decide whether you want the drain located on the left, right, or centre of the tub. Most people opt for the centre location because it allows for easy access while bathing. However, if you plan to use the tub often, you may want to consider a drain on either side of the tub since it makes cleaning easier.

3. Remove the current bathtub with care

Before you begin the removal process, turn off the water supply to the house. Open a tap at a lower floor to release any remaining pressure in the pipes. These steps ensure that the area, and yourself. remain dry should a pipe get bumped on during the remainder of the process.

4. Don't ruin your bathroom floor in the process

Installing your bathtub is relatively easy, especially if you've got someone to help you. First, start by measuring the tub to ensure there won't be any problems getting it into place. You'll need to know where the drain pipe goes and perhaps whether the tub will fit under the bathroom vanity. Next, take a look at the plumbing connections. Is there anything obstructing the pipes? Do you see any signs of leaks? Finally, check the walls and floors to determine what type of material they're made of. Wood might be easier to work with than tile, while concrete could require special tools.

5. Tackle the job in manageable pieces

Now that the old tub is out of the way, you can begin preparing the area for the installation of the new one. First, lay down a layer of insulation foam board to protect the floor. Next, lay down a layer of plywood to protect the tub itself. Finally, apply a thin coat of polyurethane sealant to ensure a smooth finish once the new tub is installed.

6. Ensure all pipe connections are perfect

When you're ready to install the new tub, place it into position on the floor. Make sure the hole where the drain pipe goes is level and centred under the tub. Then, trace around the perimeter of the tub onto the bottom of the new one. Using a utility knife, cut along the traced lines, being careful not to cut into the walls of the tub.

7. Think like a professional plumber from the start

To attach the new tub to the existing plumbing, drill holes at each corner of the tub. Drill a pilot hole slightly larger than the diameter of the drainpipe. Then, insert a threaded adapter sleeve into the pilot hole. Attach the tub to the wall with screws.

8. Take care with the overflow pipe

To attach the overflow drain assembly, you'll need to take off the existing cover plate. Remove the four screws holding down the old cover plate. Then, unscrew the overflow elbow from the tub. Next, locate the overflow elbow hose connector and attach it to the overflow elbow. Finally, replace the original cover plate and tighten it with screws.

9. Connect the drain pipe to the water supply system

The next step is connecting the drain pipe to the drain system. This is where things can go wrong quickly. If there are leaks in the old drainage system, you could end up with water damage. To prevent this, you want to connect the drain pipe to the existing drain system without disrupting it. To reattach the drain pipe, follow the same steps used to disconnect it.

10. Plan a whirlpool bath installation carefully

Installing a whirlpool bathtub is not extremely difficult, however, it does involve some planning and preparation. There are many steps involved in the process, including plumbing, wiring, and even assembling the tub itself. The biggest factor in a complicated installation is the tub frame; while most tub frames are compatible with standard drywall, there are some models that require custom framing. Some tub manufacturers recommend hiring an electrician to install the unit, due to the specialized requirements.

Once the job is completed, clean the bathroom floor and the bathtub aprons, check the plumbing pipes and the integrity of the bath taps, and then try the bathtub for comfort.
