Dr Mitchell is a General Surgeon based in Rosebank, Johannesburg. With eight subjects and four first-class distinctions in matric, Dr Mitchell became more and more intrigued by the human body and developed a real passion for understanding how it works. She sailed through medical school at the University of Cape Town (UCT) where she was placed in the top 15% in the university faculty and was invited to join the Golden Key National Honour Society.
After graduating in 2002, Dr Mitchell completed internship and community service in Klerksdorp and surrounding areas, earning the Best Community Service Doctor award and playing a pivotal role in the roll-out of new antiretroviral treatment programmes during that time. She gained extensive experience in various medical fields especially surgery and obstetrics. This was followed by a diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology through the College of Medicine of South Africa and specialist surgical training through the University of Witwatersrand.
Dr Mitchell qualified as a General Surgeon when she was admitted as a fellow in the Royal College of Surgeons SA in 2013 and received her certificate of independent practice and FCS(SA). She subsequently gained extensive experience in general surgical conditions, surgical emergencies, endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid, breast and adrenal surgery), as well as melanoma, soft tissue tumours (including lumps & bumps) and neck surgery, spending many hours successfully treating patients at Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital in Soweto, the largest hospital in the southern hemisphere, and running the Endocrine Surgery department at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
Dr Mitchell has a special interest in minimally-invasive surgery and has completed numerous workshops and courses in laparoscopic surgery, as well as a workshop run by Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.
She has also been actively involved in a number of research projects and publications, including oesophegeal replacement in children with AIDS, evaluating breast cancer in young women, South African Surgical Outcomes Study and many studies on thyroid diseases, malignancies and evaluation with fine needle aspiration biopsies.
As well as being a devoted mother of three beautiful children, Dr Mitchell is a keen runner and has successfully conquered the 89km Comrades Marathon on two occasions, as well as participating in numerous marathons and ultra-marathons around the country. Being a firm believer in enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), she became a prime example of this technique as she completed the Comrades merely 10 days after an abdominal operation herself.
