Buying a memorial can be a daunting task. This gesture of showing love and respect can be an emotional and stressful exercise.
These Hints and Tips below are intended to help you through the process
How to Select a Tombstone
We hope this easy guide will be of service as you consider how best to pay lasting tribute to your loved one.
Cemeteries
Firstly we need to know in which section the tombstone memorial will be erected. Many cemeteries have regulations regarding the size of a tombstone.
This will depend on the section of the grave. The common sections are:
• Berm / Lawn Section – Only a Headstone is allowed to be erected. In some cemeteries a special base (bigger/smaller) will be required.
• Monumental Section – Full tombstone (head, kerbs and ledger) are allowed
• Memorial or Nish walls – Inscribed plaques
All Tombstone installations are subjected to permit application.
If unsure please forward the grave details and we will get in contact with the relevant cemetery on your behalf before any purchases are made.
Stone / Material
The tombstone you purchase should be able to withstand time and weather. It should remain as beautiful as the day it is set. Therefore, we only use Granite.
Granite rocks are igneous rocks which were formed by slowly cooling pockets of magma that were trapped beneath the earth’s surface. Granite is the hardest of all building stones with a very close grain, making it almost impervious to stain and uniquely applicable for any interior or exterior use. If polished, its high-gloss finish will endure even in harsh environments.
Rustenburg granite is the most popular material used. Due to it being mined in bulk in South Africa makes it the most affordable tombstone material. It is black granite with grey specks
Design
As with choosing the design from the catalog or own design, choosing should be influenced by selecting a headstone and then by adding kerbs and a ledger.
When choosing a tombstone bear in mind that prices are usually for the headstone and base only. Kerbing, ledgers/slabs, chips, installation, wording and transport are charged separately. Be clear in what you require when requesting a quote.
The shape of a tombstone can also reflect and pay tribute to an interest of the family member being memorialized. Tombstones of this kind can be particularly arresting because they celebrate—in a very immediate way—the personality of the deceased. We are happy to custom design a stone to meet your needs; we quote from drawing or photographs.
The key element of a tombstone is, of course, the name and dates of your family member’s life. From here, you may want to consider incorporating other elements that evoke and celebrate the life of your loved one. Here are a few ideas:
Add a favorite verse that is significant to your family or family member being memorialized.
Include symbols of religious affiliation, imagery that recalls the special interests of your loved one, or imagery that commemorates an important event or aspect of your family member’s life.
We have hundreds of images to choose from: flowers, religious symbols, angels and animals or, we can create new imagery at your request.
