    - Are there wood or metal beams held up by the wall? If so, the wall is load bearing.
    - If you have access to enter the ceiling of your home, you can easily spot where roof trusses are supported by walls. This can show if the wall is load bearing or not.
    - Studying most recent house plans can indicate which walls are load bearing.
    - Get an architect to inspect your house plans if you don’t know how to read them. Make sure the plans are updated accordingly because remodelling in the past could have resulted in changes to the layout.
    - If your building plans aren’t available, get a building inspector to determine if the wall is load bearing or not.

  • Is there a way to knock down a load bearing wall?

    There are many ways to go about knocking down a load bearing wall. Use appropriate SABS approved materials and tools and follow the NHBRC (National Home Builders Registration Council) regulations.

    Following these guidelines will assist you with knocking down a wall during your building refurbishment process:

    - Using concrete lintels to bear the load after the wall is gone.
    - Steel beams can be installed to bear the load of the wall.
    - Remove the load above the wall by remodelling the structure of your home.
    - Replace the wall with columns to support the load.
