Frequently Asked Questions
  • What certifications should a day care centre have?

Day care centres in Port Elizabeth should have an early childhood development (ECD) certificate. This verifies that they are a reputable day care facility that will look after your child. Day care centres can apply for the ECD certificate at your nearest department of social development or municipal office. As a parent or guardian, you are encouraged to check if a day care has this certification.
  • How long can I leave my child at day care?

Most day care centres in Port Elizabeth open in the morning and close in the early afternoon. Common operating hours for a day care are 8am to 3pm. However, this varies depending on the age of your child and the terms and conditions of the facility. Make sure that you verify the operating hours of the day care and pick up your child at the right time. There’s a possibility that you’ll be charged extra fees if you leave your child at the day care for a prolonged period of time.
  • What should my child bring to day care?

Every day care centre will provide you with a list of items that your child needs for the day. It varies depending on your child’s age and needs.

Here’s a list of the most common items that your child could bring along to day care:

    - Towels, blankets and crib sheets
    - Diapers, wipes and creams
    - Extra pacifiers
    - Extra clothes
    - Bibs and burp cloths
    - Bottles, food or snacks
  • How many kids are enrolled in one day care centre at a time?

Most day care centres are relatively small and cater to families in specific suburbs or areas in Port Elizabeth. It’s rare to come across a day care with more than 40 children as it’s much easier to manage a small day care. In addition, every child requires plenty of care and attention. This means you should try to get your child on a waiting list for a day care centre in order to secure a spot for them when they are old enough to start attending.
  • How are children at day care centres separated?

The children are usually separated according to their age. Babies under 12 months will be kept in room with cribs and plenty of staff members to watch over them. On the other hand, older children will be cared for in a separate room where they can play with age-appropriate toys and do fun activities.
  • What should I do if I suspect my child is being mistreated at a day care centre?

If you suspect your child is being mistreated at a day care centre, make sure you remove them from the situation as soon as possible. You shouldn’t have any doubts about the facility in Port Elizabeth that you leave your child at every day. It’s important to follow up with relevant day care centre staff and let them know about any concerns that you may have. However, if you feel the situation is serious, report the day care centre to the relevant authorities.
