Builders Warehouse is part of Massmart Holdings and forms part of the Massbuild Division. Massbuild comprises Builders Warehouse, Tile Warehouse, Builders Express (formerly Servistar) and Builders Trade Depot (formerly Federated Timbers).
Massmart acquired 5 Builders Warehouse stores in 2003. 3 De La Rey stores in the Western Cape were acquired and rebranded in 2005. The chain subsequently grew and now trades out of 23 Builders Warehouse stores in 7 provinces. Builders Warehouse follows the big box or warehouse retail format, offering small to large building and maintenance contractors, DIY enthusiasts and home owners a comprehensive range of competitively priced products under one roof, with a large garden centre display and builders’ supplies yard. The brand is unique in that it is the only building material and home improvement warehouse in the country.
Builders Express was formed in 2005 when Massmart bought and rebranded 14 Servistar stores operating in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Builders Express now trades out of 21 home and garden stores in 4 provinces predominantly catering for the home owner. They focus on convenient locations, aesthetically pleasing displays, customer-friendly store layout and personalised service and advice. During the past fi nancial year, Builders Express was integrated into Builders Warehouse under a single management structure.
Builders Trade Depot originated from the acquisition of 34 Federated Timber stores that were rebranded in 2005. 8 smaller stores have since been closed and Builders Trade Depot now trades from 31 outlets catering predominantly for medium to large sized contractors and tradesmen engaged in building, maintenance and renovation projects. The chain manly focuses on servicing the needs of construction entrepreneurs who require trade credit, telephonic ordering and building materials in bulk, delivered from low-cost outlets.
In 2008 Builders Warehouse was awarded Superbrand status together with 60 other brands from an original list of over 3000. Builders Warehouse received the seal of “brand excellence” according to goodwill, customer loyalty, market dominance and longevity.
