JP was born in Cape Town in 1977 and matriculated at Outeniqua High School in George. With a love and interest in sport, he completed a BA degree in Human Movement Studies in 2000 at the University of Stellenbosch, as well as a Higher Education Teaching Diploma, before moving abroad to work as a teacher in London, England for 3 years.

He moved back to South Africa and continued his studies in Psychology at Stellenbosch University and completed his Honours in 2005. During this time he worked as a teacher and facilitator of children with special needs. In 2008 he completed his MA Clinical Psychology training at the University of Pretoria and did his Community Service for the South African National Defence Force back in Cape Town.
