Dr Govender completed her undergraduate medical degree at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine in Natal. She graduated summa cum laude as the top graduate in her class; finishing not only top of her medical school class in her final year, but also as the top student cumulatively over her 6 years of study.

She spent some time in the Department of Dermatology at King Edward VIII Hospital in Durban before embarking on her registrar training at the Department of Dermatology at the University of Witwaterstrand in Johannesburg. During her postgraduate training she worked at Chris Hani Baragwanath, Johannesburg General and Helen Joseph Hospitals in Gauteng.

After leaving the public sector she was fortunate to train and work at two prestigious dermatological laser and medical centres in Johannesburg.
