After his State examination for medicine in Berlin, Germany, Dr Gruter became both a specialist in Orthopedic and General Surgery. Subsequently Dr Gruter immigrated to Cape Town, South Africa where he completed his Plastic Surgery training at Groote Schuur Hospital and went on to become the senior consultant of the department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

In 1992 Dr Gruter went into Private Practice, covering most aspects of Cosmetic Surgery, with a focus on body contouring procedures like liposuction, breast surgery and abdominoplasties, as well as facial surgeries like face lifting, eyelid and ear correction.

Dr Gruter also consults at the University Children’s Hospital (Red Cross Hospital) on a part time basis, performing all operations concerning craniofacial deformities.
