Frequently Asked Questions
  • Do driving schools provide cars?

Most reputable driving schools in Cape Town will have a car that you can learn in. The car will be a roadworthy vehicle with learner signs. Try to find a driving school in Cape Town with relatively new vehicles. It can be difficult to learn how to drive in an old car. If the driving school does not have their own vehicles, they will probably let you know.
  • How many lessons do I need to learn how to drive?

There are multiple factors which determine how long it takes for someone to learn how to drive. If you have prior driving experience, you might pick up on everything rather quickly. In addition, some people tend to learn faster than others. If there are prolonged time periods where you don’t take any lessons, you might lose some of your driving skills. This means it could take longer to learn how to drive.
  • How do I know that I’ll be safe when learning to drive?

There are cars which have special features for learner drivers. For example, some cars will have an extra break installed on the passenger side. This means your instructor can control the speed of the vehicle and keep you safe while you are learning. Instructors have also been known to use cruise control and cameras to monitor the learner while they drive.
  • Do I need a learner’s licence to book a driving lesson?

You must have a learner’s licence in order to take driving lessons. Otherwise, it will be illegal for you to drive on public roads. All legitimate driving schools in Cape Town will require you to have you learners’ licence with you during every lesson. If you don’t have a learner’s licence, you can book a test at your local licencing department in Cape Town. You will be required to pay a fee. Your test date could be 1 to 30 days after your booking. Make sure you are ready to take the test before you go and make the booking. If you fail the test, you will have to pay to take the test again.
  • Do driving schools book the driving test for you?

You will be required to book your own driving test. Driving schools in Cape Town could assist you in the process by telling you which documents you require and what fees you will have to pay. Unfortunately, driving tests are not free. You will be required to pay to take the test again if you fail.
  • Can I take driving lessons at night?

It is not advisable for learners to take driving lessons at night. However, there are driving schools in Cape Town who give lessons in the evening. This could be useful for leaner drivers who have work or school during the day.
