Way back in 1999, a young second year university student, Tony Richardson, saw a need for a tutoring service supplying qualified, screened tutors, who could travel to scholars in the Gauteng area, giving them extra lessons in the comfort of their own homes. Initially Tony roped in his fellow university students to tutor and as the demand for the service grew these same tutor/students used their newly learned, diverse skills, to set up marketing, administration and tutor training systems. Many of these systems are still in place today.
Under Tony's leadership as sole proprietor, the business expanded to include Capetown, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London areas. After graduating Tony employed 2 lesson co ordinators and registered Education Matters as a cc in 2003. He continued to be involved in the day to day running of the business until he sold it to Heather Scrooby in 2007.
Heather, herself a young entrpreneur, systems analyst and computer programmer, set about designing a user friendly, multi tiered database for the, by now, 1000s of tutors spread countrywide. Because of escalating transport costs, she concentrated her efforts on designing a system to assist lesson co ordinators to find the best and closest tutors for new clients as quickly as possible. At the end of 2009, due to family and work commitments, Heather onsold to Sheelagh Tingle, a satisfied Education Matters client. She does however continue to work on the database, upgrading and improving it as technology advances.
