The Oak is a cosy guesthouse nestled amongst one of the oldest Oak trees of Potchefstroom. According to historical interpretations, President
Paul Kruger and Hendrik Potgieter moved with the “Great Trek” to the area where Potchefstroom is today. It is told that President Kruger and his parents used this oak tree, along with its predecessors, at The Oak as a `staanplek' for their ox-wagons in 1835 after which the town was established in 1838.
Deale House, which is now known as The Oak, was erected approximately 1910. The
Deale family ran the old mill near the Bult, where they produced corn and dairy
products. During the Great Flu pandemic of the 1920's, Deale House was used for
quarantine purposes and in the 1960's the Potchefstroom Gimnasium High School
used Deale House as a boy's hostel. The hostel was known as 'Brandwag Buitehuis'
where Mr. W. J. van Vuuren and his assistant, Mr M. J. J. Erasmus, took care of 27 boys.
In 1980 Johan Grove (who was a well-known attorney in Potchefstroom) and Ansa
Grove purchased The Oak from Johan's brother Stefan Grove. In 1985 Johan built the present swimming pool and added the house's first floor. In March 2009 restoration and upgrading of the old building commenced and the guest house previously known as The Oak Lodge was officially re-opened on 12 September 2009 by Dr. Julie Conradie and Dr. Pieter Conradie. Under new management Armand Cronjé and Olivier Burger continued to run the guest house from September 2020.
