Occupational Therapy (OT) is a client-centred health profession concerned with promoting health and well- being through occupation. The term “Occupation”, doesn’t mean OT’s only deal with work issues, as is normally confused by many, rather this term is viewed more broadly, and in our professional context, it refers to the everyday activities that people do as individuals, in families and with communities to occupy time and bring meaning and purpose to life. Occupations include things people need, want and are expected to do in their daily lives (WFOT,2012).
The understanding of the availability and access to OT services may contribute to improved holistic health outcomes.
The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. OT’s achieve this outcome by working with people (children, adults, and geriatrics), and communities to enhance their ability to engage in the occupations they want, need and or are expected to do, or by modifying the occupation or the environment to better support their occupational engagement. (WFOT 2012).
