Are you planning to move in the near future? Perhaps the most strenuous and tiring part of the process are furniture removals. Of course, you can hire a professional to help you with furniture removals, but if you choose to go DIY, you need to follow a few tips. Here are 8 furniture removal tips you should memorize:
1. Go High and Low with Tall Items
Don’t attempt to carry any tall items alone. Get at least one other person to help. The right technique to lift tall items is tipping them backward and then lifting it, with one person carrying from the top and the other from the bottom. This approach also makes it easier for you to carry tall items up and down the stairs.
2. Remember to Hook
Professional movers swear by the hooking technique when it comes to large chairs. Whenever taking it around corners, they hook the chair, pushing it back-first, while forming an ‘L’.
3. Move Couches Vertically
Carrying couches through a door or hallway can be difficult if you move horizontally. Turning the couch when carrying it horizontally can be hard. This is why you should stand the couch up, and move it vertically. In case the couch is taller than the space available to you, you should start at a distance from the door and gain clearance.
4. Use Dollies
You can invest in lifting and moving straps which allow you to distribute weight effectively. You can lift items using the larger and stronger muscles, reducing the strain on your back. Shoulder dollies allow you to easily move items around, but it might not be a good idea to use them on the stairs.
5. Slide Items
You can easily find furniture slides on the market. They are available in different designs and sizes, letting you slide the items across the floor rather than carrying them. You can also go DIY with slides, i.e. using bedspreads or plastic sheets.
6. Secure the Furniture
You need to keep the furniture and other items that you are moving safe during the move. There are different items available that you can use for securing furniture, including plastic and blankets. You have to be particularly careful about the edges of different furniture items.
7. Create a Mattress Sling
Mattresses generally include handles, but they are only intended to help you position them. You cannot rely on them to carry the mattress. You can create a mattress sling to enable you to lift and carry mattresses along. You can buy one off the market or make one using PVC pipe and rope.
8. Plan It Out
Last, but not the least, before you get to furniture removals, have a clear idea of where you want to place each item when you move to a new place. This will make it easier for you to carry and place items as soon as you reach your destination.
These are 8 tips for furniture removals that you should keep in mind. However, if moving feels like too much work, you should definitely consider hiring professional movers.
