Koeks creates custom 'art sweets' modelled after iconic works of art - aiming to make 'tasteful' art available to those who wish to experience it in the form of a delicious dessert, or as an addition to the budding museums in their fridge. Koeks is also a for profit enterprise, the proceeds of which go into funding the production of the sweets and into a source of income for its two respective owners. The Koeks team consists of two enthusiastic young ladies, Victoria Wigzell and Skye Quadling.
To date, Koeks has created sweet versions of iconic artworks in collaboration with Stevenson Johannesburg as well as the Sober and Lonely Institute for Contemporary Art, but are perhaps best known for their first creation: a bubblegum jelly and coconut chocolate rendition of Damien Hirst's The Impossibility of Death in the Eyes of Someone Living.
Koeks recently enjoyed their debut as an artistic project and a business at the FNB Joburg Art Fair this year. Here, the Koeks distributed their wares using classic tray tables - circulating between gallery booths and food stalls to offer fair goers their own bite-sized piece of art at an affordable price.
Leading up to the FNB Joburg Art Fair Koeks were featured in the Sandton Chronicle newspaper, who described the project as, “a unique and delicious form of art.”
