In order to become a registered psychologist, they must complete an undergraduate degree, an Honours degree and a Master’s degree. Once that’s been completed, they’ll need to complete practical training and register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Psychologists in Cape Town help people with everyday concerns such as stress and relationship difficulties, as well as mental health issues.

    Contrastingly, psychiatrists have completed a medical degree and further training related to the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. Psychiatrists in Cape Town specialise in the medical treatment of mental illness and they are authorised to prescribe medication. Some psychiatrists combine medication with therapy.

  • Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
